In partnership with the Mekelle University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS) and Iris Fistula, Healing Hands of Joy launched the Skilled Hands of Joy program at the end of 2014. Skilled Hands of Joy provides scholarships to students from the Tigray region in the Clinical Midwifery Masters program at MUCHS.

During this three-year program, midwives have the opportunity to expand their skills sets with an emphasis on emergency obstetric practices, including performing Caesarean sections. These skills will allow them to properly address complications associated with prolonged, obstructed labor which can lead to fistula.

Thanks to our partners, we were able to provide three students with scholarships. After graduating from the program, the midwives will return to their work in rural hospitals with new skills to help prevent fistula in their communities.
