In December 2014, a consultant team from Columbia Business School’s Pangea Program visited Healing Hands of Joy and spent one week evaluating the performance of a group of 26 Safe Motherhood Ambassadors who graduated from Healing Hands in 2012.
The case study concluded that not only were SMAs effectively raising awareness of fistula in their communities and preventing future occurrences, but that the SMA’s impact was growing over time
- On average, the 26 SMAs each educated 40 pregnant women
- SMAs educated over 1,000 pregnant women
- SMAs ensured that over 700 pregnant women delivered at health centers
