Ethiopia
is Africa's oldest independent and landlocked country located in the Horn of Africa. It has the second-largest population in Africa and the population is expected to reach 100,000,000 in the coming few years. Ethiopia is divided in to nine regions, and Healing Hands of Joy works to help mothers with fistula in three of the most populated regions.
Amhara
In July 2015, Healing Hands of Joy opened its Bahir Dar center in the capital of Amhara region. The region has high rates of child marriage that contributes to the prevalence of obstetric fistula. Amhara region shows the highest percentage of home deliveries.

In September 2015, Healing Hands of Joy opened its 3rd Safe Motherhood Ambassadors Rehabilitation and Reintegration center in Hawssa, capital of Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR).

Tigray
In November 2010, recognizing the need for rehabilitation and reintegration services for fistula patients post-surgery, HHOJ established its first center in Mekelle, Tigray region of Ethiopia to provide a home for former fistula patients during their training as Safe Motherhood Ambassadors.

Amhara

Southern is located in the lush, southern part of Ethiopia, where an agrarian society produces 44% of Ethiopia’s coffee. There are approximately 500 women waiting for obstetric fistula surgery in this region. |
Tigray
Tigray is located in the northern part of Ethiopia, where the population is the most densely populated. There are approximately 200 women waiting for obstetric fistula surgery in this region. |
